Iowa Traffic Fatalities Seem to be Declining

For most of the last six years, the number of traffic related fatalities in Iowa has held fairly steady. However, that may be changing. 2008 saw the second lowest number of fatalities of the period, and this year seems to be on track for even lower numbers.

Last year, there were 411 traffic fatalities. Over the last six years, only 2004 saw fewer deaths with 388. This year, there have been relatively few traffic fatalities when compared on a month to month basis with previous years, indicating a possible start to a downward trend. However, even if there are fewer deaths, many people are still being killed and badly injured on Iowa roads.

Cyclist Injuries Cause Tension on Road

An April 11 accident occurred when a truck passed a cyclist unsafely. The passing caused the cyclist to lose control and fall over, fracturing his pelvis and skull as well as causing several other injuries.

The cyclist is expected to make a full recovery. However, a rally was held last week outside the Statehouse in which 500 cyclists protested road rage from drivers directed at cyclists. These incidents often lead to terrible injuries and even death.

Two Dead in Truck Crash

Two semi-truck drivers have been killed in a serious accident. One of the drivers was 22 years-of-age, and the other driver was 47 years-of-age.  The Iowa Highway Patrol is investigation the accident, trying to determine the causes.

What is known, is that one of the semis was struck from behind.  This then caused the truck to burst into flames. The two individuals in the truck that caught fire lost their lives in this accident.  The other driver did not suffer from serious injuries from this accident.

The highway was closed for several hours as authorities conducted a preliminary investigation and removed the damaged vehicles from the road.
