Cyclist Injured in Hit and Run

On Thursday evening, a cyclist was involved in a crash caused by a car. The cyclist was northbound on Southeast Sixth St around 7:30pm when a car brushed against him, knocking him over.

The cyclist dislocated his shoulder and took himself to Broadlawns Medical Center for treatment. Unfortunately, the car did not stop after causing the accident.

Hit and Run Kills 1, Injures 1

Early Saturday morning, a hit and run crash occurred at Capitol Ave and 22nd St. Around 1:30am, an SUV struck a car. The driver and a passenger in the SUV fled the scene on foot.

The driver and passenger in the car were taken to Mercy Medical Center where the passenger died. The driver was listed as being in fair condition on Tuesday. The driver of the SUV has since been arrested.

Bus Review after Multiple Accidents

Over the last two years, 6 pedestrians have been hit by public transit buses. The most recent of these occurred this week when a 54 year old woman was struck in a crosswalk.

All 6 of the accidents occurred while the buses were making left turns. Because of this, the Public Transit Authority has already cut down on the number of left turns buses make. Now driver safety measures are being reviewed in relation to the accidents.

Pedestrian Hit by Bus

Thursday morning, a bus and a pedestrian were involved in a collision in downtown Des Moines. The pedestrian was crossing Ninth St at Walnut St when the bus turned left and hit her.

According to witnesses, the woman was conscious after being hit. She was transported to Iowa Methodist Medical Center for treatment. Her condition was not reported.

1 Vehicle, Multiple Crashes

On Monday, a man ran a red light downtown and struck an elderly woman’s car around 10am at Ninth St and Center St. He then reversed into a utility pole and several parked cars.

The elderly woman in the first collision did not require hospitalization. However, a passenger in the pickup that caused the accidents was taken to Mercy Medical Center for treatment.

Boating Accident Kills 1

On Tuesday, a couple was in a small boat on the Des Moines River when they went over the Center Street Dam. According to reports, the couple was looking for a spot to take their children for the 4th of July.

When the boat went over the dam, a construction worker who was suspended from a crane was able to hang onto the wife, saving her. However, the husband went over and was pronounced dead when his body was pulled from the river.

Rollover Injures 2

On Wednesday a rollover accident occurred when a driver lost control of her car. The car was traveling southbound along I-235 when it struck a chain link fence, landed on its nose and came to rest on its top in the lanes of Northeast Broadway Ave.

The accident, which occurred shortly after 7pm, injured two women in the vehicle. The driver suffered a broken ankle while the passenger sustained bruising and cuts. Neither had life threatening injuries.

Crash Hospitalizes 10

A crash occurred along Highway 141 near Grimes on Wednesday. Two vans were involved in the crash. The first was making a turn when it struck the other van, causing it to roll over.

The van that rolled was carrying 9 children and 2 adults. All 9 of the children were hospitalized after the crash. Of the 2 adults, only one was hospitalized. Their conditions were not reported.

Motorcycle Rider Killed in Crash

On Thursday, a motorcycle and a pickup truck were involved in an accident in Jefferson County. The motorcycle was eastbound on Libertyville Rd near Highway 1 when it ran into the passenger side of a truck making a left turn around 8:40pm.

The 17 year old driver of the pickup truck was uninjured in the crash. The motorcycle rider was killed in the collision. Police are still investigating the incident. No one else was injured.

Crash Kills, Injures Family Members

On June 14, a van was being driven southbound along Highway 61. The driver went off the road, over corrected, struck the median and rolled over. Four passengers were not wearing their seat belts and were ejected in the crash. The driver stayed in the van.

The mother and 10 year old daughter were air lifted to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The 15 year old driver and her 13 year old brother were taken to Mercy Hospital in Dubuque. The father was pronounced dead at the scene. There is no word on the survivors’ conditions or injuries.
