Des Moines bicyclist injured in morning car accident

A man was injured after bicycle accident occurred Friday morning in Des Moines.

According to Des Moines police officials, the accident occurred just before 7 a.m. when the man was  in the middle lane of Hubbell Avenue while waiting to turn into a parking lot.

The 22-year-old biker did not have lights on his bicycle at the time of the collision and the driver was coming up a hill at the time. The driver of the car stated that he could not see the bicyclist and he hit the back of the bike as a result. The bicyclist was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries including a broken leg. No citations were issued as a result of the crash.

Winter weather brings more injuries

This week, hospitals in Iowa have been admitting more patients with winter weather-related injuries.  Officials say the most common injury is related to slip-and-fall accidents from properties not cleaning up snow and slush.

At Mercy Medical Center, Mercy Children’s Emergency Center and Mercy Medical Center West Lakes, doctors saw 61 patients for injuries by noon on Tuesday.  15 of the injuries were from traffic accidents and one patient suffered an injury from a defective snow blower.  In addition, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Methodist West and Lutheran Hospital, 27 patients were treated for “snow storm-related” injuries before noon.

An official from Mercy Medical Center said the injuries mostly affected people’s backs, legs, shoulders, ankles and wrists.

Police Identify Man Injured in Motorcycle Crash

Police have identified a man injured in a Des Moines motorcycle accident Thursday.

According to officials with the Des Moines Police Department, a 54 year-old man was found by a passerby shortly after 6:00 a.m. Thursday near the 1100 block of Southeast McKinley Avenue. Police Sergeant Chris Scott said the exact time of the motorcycle crash is still unknown, as is the cause of the accident. Investigators say the man may have swerved to avoid another vehicle, or possibly a deer. “There is a wooded area there,” Scott said.

The man was transported by ambulance to Iowa Methodist Medical Center for treatment following the crash. He is listed in serious condition.

Southeast McKinley was closed near the accident scene while investigators worked to recreate the crash.


Iowa teen dies in rollover accident

An Iowa teen was killed in a one-car accident. According to police reports, the accident occurred Sunday in Bremer County.

The car apparently was traveling down 240th St. when the car rolled over. When medicial officials arrived to the scene, the three teenagers in the vehicle were taken to a nearby hospital, where one of them died from his injuries.

Cooper Tire to appeal $32.8 million decision

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. will appeal a court decision that awarded accident victims more than $32.8 million. According to court reports, the accident occurred in 2007 and involved a fatal minivan rollover.

After weeks of hearing testimony, the jury decided that Cooper tire was liable because the tire on the minivan was did not meet industry standards. The jury decision resulted in rewards to numerous victims and their families.

Three people injured in Iowa airplane crash

Three people were injured in a plane accident Saturday. According to police reports, the aircraft accident occurred near Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids. 

The pilot and two passengers aborad the plane were taken to nearby University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. According to the aviation department,  the plane was trying to land at the airport.

Winter weather leads to a number of Iowa car accidents

Winter weather last week was responsible for a number of Iowa car accidents. According to police reports, at least three trucks and multiple cars lost control due to icy conditions.

LED bulbs installed in some traffic lights is proving to be more hazardous than helpful. The bulbs were originally installed as an energy-saving solution for traffic lights.

Woman dies in car accident on Highway 5

A woman died in a traffic accident Sunday on Highway 5. According to police reports, the woman swerved into the other lane and hit a semi truck.

The woman reportedly died in the accident, while there was no report on whether  the driver was injured. According to police reports, inclement weather and icy conditions may have contributed to the crash.
