Drunk driver sentenced to 50 years for deaths of motorcyclists

A 22-year-old man from Iowa was recently sentenced to fifty years in prison after he was convicted of driving drunk and causing an accident that took the lives of four motorcyclists.

The accident occurred in August of last year on Interstate 29. The 22-year-old man drove his vehicle across the center line of traffic and crashed into four motorcyclists that were traveling in the opposite direction. The man was found to have a blood alcohol content that was four times the legal limit.

The judge in the trial stated that he hoped the sentencing in this case would serve as a deterrent for others to drink and drive.

Drunk driver facing charges over 4 fatality crash

The Nebraska man arrested in connection with the August 9th drunk driving crash that killed four motorcyclists in Western Iowa last month is now facing charges in court.

According to the Iowa State Patrol’s final accident report, the 21-year-old driver had a blood alcohol level over four times the legal limit at the time of the accident. He had a BAC of 0.373, while the legal limit is 0.08.

The fatal accident happened in a construction zone on Interstate 29 near the Little Sioux exit. Four motorcyclists, who were heading home from a motorcycling convention, were struck by the drunk driver when he crossed the center line while headed in the opposite direction in his pickup truck.

Criminal charges against the drunk driver are pending an official report from the state crime lab’s toxicology unit, but will definitely be filed. In the meantime, he remains incaracerated. The widow of one of the motorcyclists has already filed a civil suit against the drunk driver, alleging that his negligence was the primary cause of the collision.

Iowa woman receives suspended sentence and probation for drunk driving accident

A woman from northern Iowa received a suspended sentence and probation nearly two years after she caused a car accident that killed one of her passengers.

The accident occurred in August, 2008 near Marble Rock. According to court reports, the woman was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs when the accident occurred. She was originally charged with vehicular homicide.

Iowa rep arrested for drunk driving claims he was drinking with the governor

Iowa State Representative Kerry Burt was arrested for drunk driving in February.  The police report released recently reveals that Rep. Burt tried to get out of the arrest by claiming he was drinking with the Governor.

After the officer pulled over Rep. Burt, the officer gave Burt a breathalzyer test that registered 1.31 blood alcohol content. Burt then asked the officer to call a number of important state officials to get him out of the arrest. The officer evenutallly arrested Rep. Burt and took him to jail.

According to a spokesperson for the Governor’s office, the Governor was at a reception in downtown Des Moines with Rep. Burt, but he cannot account for Burt’s drunkenness because he returned home by 8:55 p.m.
