Record number of traffic fatalities in 2010

In West Des Moines, there were twice as many traffic fatalities in 2010 than there were in 2008 and 2009 combined. Over the past year, a total of eight people were killed in car accidents, as compared to two people in 2009 and one person in 2008. Six out of the eight fatal crashes occurs on one of the large highways or interstates in the city limits.

The West Des Moines police lieutinent says that it makes sense there are a higher number of serious accidents out on larger roads, since a higher number of cars at faster speeds can cause more damaging accidents.

The Des Moines personal injury attorneys at LaMarca Law Group, P.C. hope that everyone out on the road makes a personal effort to drive with added caution in 2011 to reduce the risk of accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

Driver responsible for cyclist’s death turns himself in

The man responsible for the car-bicycling accident death of a Cedar Rapids bicyclist in July turned himself in to authorities this week.

Police issued an arrest warrant was issued for the man after police were unable to locate him. Authorities say that the man turned himself in after a friend of his saw a news report about the warrant and told him.

He was charged with failure to yield and having no insurance in his involvement in the July 29 accident. The crash occurred on C Street SW and left the woman cyclist with serious head injuries, from which she died four days later in hospital care.

Collision between cyclist and truck ends in tragedy

The Iowa State Patrol reports that an accident with a truck near the city of Montezuma in central Iowa left a bicyclist from Oregon dead this Wednesday.

The 33-year-old bicyclist was pedaling on Iowa Highway 85. When the truck driver spotted the cyclist, he moved towards the center line to allow for more room.

It was then that the truck’s front right tire failed, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The truck lurched to the right, striking and killing the cyclist.

Des Moines residents divided over decision to add traffic cameras

On July 12th, the Des Moines City Council hired a Massachusetts-based company to install a number of traffic cameras at various intersections yet to be determined.  Police estimate each camera could cost the city around $100,000 a year.

Capt. Doug Harvey argues, “It’s a very good tool.  It lowers crashes at intersections”.  However, former Police Chief Bill McCarthy disagrees.  McCarthy has continuously argued that the cost is not worth the small increase in traffic safety.  He said, “The truth is that it is about money, money money… I believe it’s a poor way to treat your citizenry”.

Others are arguing the money spent on cameras could be spent on more officers to protect roadways all over, not just at intersections.

Driver Not at Fault In Car vs. Bicycle Accident

The driver of a car that hit a bicyclist on Sunday is not at fault, police said. They did have to issue him a ticket for not having his proof of insurance. According to witnesses 47-year-old Dan Bell had no way to avoid the accident.

A friend told police that her warned Michael Olson, the injured bicyclist, that a car was coming and not to ride into the street. He said Olson proceeded to ride in a circle and then cross the street in front of the car, in an attempt to beat the vehicle.

The driver, Bell, heard the bicyclists but could not stop his car in time. 39-year-old Michael Olson had suffered severe ankle injuries and road rash. Olson says that he cannot remember what happened.

Memorial Day activities result in four Iowa deaths

At least four people died in Iowa last weekend while celebrating Memorial Day activities. A 10-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl were among those killed. A spokesman for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources said that they have been so busy responding to calls that there hasn’t been any time to count the tragedies.

Sunny skies with temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s attracted more boaters than usual this Memorial Day weekend. Officials also suspect that Iowans experiencing a cash-crunch in the dwindling economy opted to entertain themselves on the lake instead of taking a more expensive long weekend out of state. The number of boat crashes was higher than normal this year and was the cause of death for two of the four victims. Although there were more boat crash and swimming fatalities this Memorial Day than in previous years, there were fewer motor vehicle collisions. At least 11 people died in vehicle collisions last year, the deadliest Memorial Day weekend in two decades. As of Monday evening, only one of the Memorial Day deaths was attributed to a land vehicle collision.
