Following the suicide of former Atlanta Falcons safety Ray Easterling, one of the more than five dozen personal injury lawsuits against the NFL will be changed to wrongful death. Easterling was a part of one of the first lawsuits filed against the league.

Easterling, 62, was found dead last Thursday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in his Virginia home. Prior to his death, friends and family say his memory had begun to deteriorate.

More than 1,260 former NFL players are represented in the 61 lawsuits against the league. They accuse of NFL of carelessness, negligence, intentional misconduct, and concealing information regarding the long-term damage of concussions.

A 12 year-old Sioux City boy was seriously injured Monday after he was hit in the head by a gate as he was loading hogs into a trailer. According to the Sioux County Sheriff’s spokesman, the trailer’s brakes appear to have failed, causing it roll backwards into the gate.

The force of the impact caused the gate to heavily swing and hit the young boy in the head. He was incapacitated by the blow and was taken by ambulance to the Sioux Center Hospital.

No further information on his condition was given. As of Wednesday, the hospital no longer listed the boy as a patient.

A Florida mother has filed a lawsuit against Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center and a nurse for negligence and failing to properly train hospital staff after her daughter’s finger was accidentally cut off by the nurse.

The 15 year-old mom took her then three-month old daughter to the hospital for a high fever and bronchitis. She stayed in the hospital for three days and had to have an IV. It was when the nurse was cutting the bandage that kept the tube in place that she snipped the child’s pinky finger.

The child was immediately taken to Tampa General Hospital, but surgeons could not reattach the finger because the nerve endings were too small. The mother is concerned about the physical and emotional effects her child may experience.

Two nursing homes in Iowa have received one-star and two-star ratings on the government’s five-star rating scale. Ratings are issued by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and includes factors such as staffing ratios, health inspections, and self-reported quality measures.

One of the nursing homes, located in Coralville, received a one-star rating six times and a two-start rating twice over a seven-year biannual period. Between November 2010 and January 2012, the facility had 33 health violations, well over the state average of seven.

The two-star nursing home was found to have numerous cleanliness and repair deficiencies in many of its residents’ rooms. The administrator for the facility says she’s working toward improving the rating.

An Iowa State Patrol trooper suffered minor injuries yesterday when a semi-truck collided with his patrol car on the entrance ramp of U.S. 20 and Interstate 35.

The trooper was assisting another officer at the scene of a car accident when the collision occurred. The trooper and a driver involved in the first crash were inside the cruiser and taken to a hospital in Webster City with non life-threatening injuries.

High winds and heavy slush on the roads resulted in poor visibility, but it has not been determined whether those factors contributed significantly to the accident. Authorities are still investigating the crash.
