Des Moines man charged with OWI and assault

On Monday, March 17 Vacarro Lee Butts, 26, caused a car accident in Des Moines. After the accident, he assaulted another driver and left the accident site.

The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Southwest Ninth Street and Army Post Road. A responding officer witnessed Butts punched the other driver twice in the face before fleeing towards Dickman Street. Butts eventually crashed through a gate and fence at Fort Des Moines Museum.

Butts was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, operating while intoxicated (OWI), assault, driving with an open container, second-degree criminal mischief, interference with official acts, driving while barred, driving without insurance, and striking fixtures.

Des Moines police search for hit-and-run suspect

Police in Des Moines have released a description of vehicle involved in a February hit-and-run incident.

The accident occurred on Friday, February 14 around 11 p.m. near the 900 block of East Euclid Avenue. The accident claimed the life of John Haggar, 52. According to witnesses, after hitting Haggar, the suspect didn’t slow down or check on the victim.

The police believe that the suspect is driving a gray mid-sized vehicle, similar to a Ford Taurus or Chevrolet Impala.

Polk County Crime Stoppers are offering a reward of up to $2,000 to anyone able to give information leading to the arrest of the suspect.


Iowa State Trooper injured in auto accident

An Iowa State Trooper was injured while helping victims of a 30-vehicle pileup on Saturday, January 18.

Authorities cite icy weather conditions for the pileup on Highway 80 near Iowa City.

The lanes between Exit 244, Dubuque Street and Exit 246, Dodge Street were closed because of the accident. Another lane on the eastbound side of Highway 80 was closed while rescue teams cleaned the accident site.

Car accident in Ames kills one

The Ames Police Department reported that a two-vehicle, head-collision in the 1100 block of East 13th Street in Ames, Story County in Iowa at around 5:34 p.m. on Thursday, January 9 has resulted in the death of a single individual.

The other driver was reportedly rushed to the Mary Greeley Medical Center to treat his non-life-threatening injuries. The person who died due to the accident was also taken to the hospital, but passed while at the hospital.

According to the police, the accident occurred when an eastbound car veered off the roadway, struck the center line, and smashed into the Skunk River Bridge, thereafter immediately bouncing off to hit a car heading west.

Moravia two-car accident injures three people

On Sunday, December 1, a two-car accident in Moravia near the Honey Creek Resort injured three people.

According to the preliminary accident report of the Iowa State Police, the collision occurred around 11:16 a.m. at the Highway J-18 and Resort Drive intersection.

Preliminary investigation shows that the vehicle driven by Eichenberger made an early turn into Resort Drive, colliding with the driver’s side of Rash’s car, causing Rash’s vehicle to roll into a ditch off of Highway J-18.

After the accident, 19 -year-old Brandon Rash was airlifted to a Des Moines hospital with serious injuries. 17-year-old Jennifer Watters and 60-year-old Jerome Eichenberger were both transported to the Mercy Medical Center in Centerville by EMT teams.
