MLB pitcher, Bobby Jenks, victim of medical mistake

Pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, Bobby Jenks, revealed this week how became the victim of a medical mistake after undergoing surgery on his spine.

Last December, Jenks went to Massachusetts General Hospital to have two of his four bone spurs removed from his spine. While doctors successfully removed two of the bone spurs, they started on the third but failed to finish. The spur was serrated, leaving holes that allowed spinal fluid to leak out.

Jenks noticed something was wrong when fluid began to leak out of his incision about two weeks after the surgery. A second operation found the mistake and an infection that was caused by the open spur.

Arsenic found in some organic foods

A study by researchers at Dartmouth College has found high levels of arsenic in organic foods containing brown rice syrup.

Brown rice syrup is a sweetener often used as a substitute for high fructose corn syrup. Some food products the researchers tested were organic baby formula, cereal bars, and energy shot drinks. In some brands, they found levels of arsenic above the EPA limit for drinking water.

Arsenic is a carcinogen that can cause cancer and heart disease. Infants who consume arsenic could have lower intellectual functions and lower IQs. Researchers believe that eating some foods with brown rice syrup would be relatively harmless if consumed in moderation.

Mother and father killed in car accident

A Wellman couple died last week in a car accident near Tiffin.

According to Iowa State Patrol, the husband, 47, and his wife, 46, were traveling to their son’s wrestling match when the man lost control on the ice, drove into a ditch, and rolled the car. Their 18 year-old daughter was also in the car, but sustained only minor injuries.

The father died at the scene, and the mother died later at the hospital. The couple is survived by their four children, ranging in age from 14 to 20 years-old. The mother’s sister and brother-in-law will take in the children.

Packaging error could lead to unplanned pregnancy

Pfizer has issued a recall of nearly a million birth control pills after a packaging error could cause women to become unintentionally pregnant.

A mix up of placebos and contraceptives could cause the pills to become significantly weakened, potentially increasing the users’ risk of becoming pregnant. The brands affected by the recall are Lo/Ovral-38 and the generic forms, norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol, with expiration dates between July 31, 2013 to March 31, 2014.

Women who believe their birth control package is defective should start using non-hormonal birth control immediately. The mix up is not believed to cause harm to the child should a pregnancy occur.
