Justin Dalton’s practice includes business transactions and litigation.  His education and experience combine to give him a practical, value-added approach to business law and complex litigation.

Mr. Dalton graduated magna cum laude from Northwestern College with a triple major in Accounting, Economics, and Business Administration. He is the first student in Northwestern’s history to complete three stand-alone majors in four years. He went on to pursue a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Drake University where he graduated with honors and also obtained a M.B.A. from Drake University’s College of Business and Public Administration.  More recently, Mr. Dalton was appointed to serve on the Business Law Section Council for the Iowa State Bar Association.

As a member of our firm’s Business Practice Group, Mr. Dalton represents public and closely held companies in a variety of industries—health care, real estate, construction, technology services, insurance, retail, manufacturing, franchising, and others.  He counsels owners on litigation, partnership formation/dissolutions, non-competition disputes, protection of trade secrets, executive compensation issues, business torts, contract claims, mergers/acquisitions, employment disputes, and corporate governance, including issues relating to derivative actions, fiduciary duties of directors, interested director transactions, board and stockholder meetings, transactional due diligence, board committee functions, charter and bylaw provisions, and hostile takeovers.

In his practice, Mr. Dalton draws on a wealth of past marketplace experience, which includes (i) founding and operating entrepreneurial ventures of his own, (ii) performing audits for a public accounting firm, (iii) studying markets as a research analyst for a global company specializing in animal nutrition science, and (iv) handling property and casualty losses as a claim adjuster for State Farm Fire and Casualty.

Mr. Dalton is one of only four attorneys in the State of Iowa to have earned a LEED AP (Accredited Professional) designation. LEED APs are building industry professionals who have demonstrated a thorough understanding of green building practices and the LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™. The LEED AP credential indicates that the professional has the knowledge and skills to facilitate the LEED certification process.

Mr. Dalton is a member of the Lutheran Church of Hope in West Des Moines.  In his spare time, he enjoys competitive shotgun shooting and watching college athletics with friends and family.
